"deviation" attribute of AHN4 cloud points

When looking at the cloud points of AHN4, there is an attribute called “deviation” (please see a screenshot for the attributes from R). The values seem a bit weird as the range is [1, 65535] for my area of interest. Does anyone knows what deviation is it about? Does it relate to the accuracy of the height measurements or any other accuracy?

You may find more information in this Riegl whitepaper on the extra bytes.

Pulse shape deviation: “high values hint to echo signals with a significantly different pulse shape, which may arise from, e.g., merging echo pulses from several targets hit by the laser beam at only slightly different ranges or extremely slanting angles of incident. This effect could be used, e.g., to detect vertical surfaces from ALS Lidar data, as indicated by the right image.”
